๐ 1 Kings 4 : Solomon’s Wisdom and His Wealth and Splendor
Chapter 4 highlights Solomon’s wisdom along with his wealth and splendor. Here are the points that stand out most.
๐ A Look Back at Chapter 3
- King Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and took his daughter as his wife.
- After a thousand burnt offerings, he received great gifts from God.
- Of the gifts of wisdom and of riches and glory, the wisdom he received was revealed to all the people.
① Abiathar (v. 4)
Verse 4 records Abiathar as a priest, together with Zadok. However, 1 Kings 2:26-27 already states that Solomon removed Abiathar from the priesthood and sent him to Anathoth. So the list in chapter 4 may reflect the makeup of the early part of Solomon’s reign.
② The Twelve Officers (v. 7)
Solomon appointed twelve officers over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each one had to provide for one month of the year.
An organized system in which the regions took turns month by month to supply even the royal table: something hard to find precedent for.
③ The Marriages of Solomon’s Daughters (v. 11 and 15)
Verses 11 and 15 record the marriages of Solomon’s daughters. Since his daughters were already of marriageable age, this list of officials appears to include key figures from the middle of Solomon’s reign and beyond.
④ A Time of Peace and Prosperity (v. 20)
Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea; they ate, they drank, and they were happy.
⑤ A Record of Power (v. 21)
Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
⑥ Power and Peace (v. 24-25)
For he ruled over all the region west of the River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the River, and he had peace on all sides around him. During all the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, each man under his own vine and fig tree.
⑦ Wisdom and Understanding (v. 29-30)
God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceedingly great, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.
๐ก An Interesting Point
The Bible compares Solomon’s wisdom with that of “all the people of the east” and “all the wisdom of Egypt.” Since ancient times, the wisdom of the peoples of the east and of the Egyptians was widely known, which is likely why these two appear as the standard of comparison. It means Solomon surpassed even those recognized as the wisest of his day.
๐ Solomon’s Wisdom Reached the Kings of the Whole Earth
- He spoke three thousand proverbs;
- his songs numbered a thousand and five;
- he spoke of trees, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall;
- he also spoke of beasts, birds, reptiles, and fish;
- people came from all nations to hear Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
✍️ Conclusion
Chapter 4 appears to record the fulfillment of the promise in 1 Kings 3:12-13:
➡️ I will do as you have asked: I give you a wise and discerning heart
➡️ so that there has been no one like you before you, and none like you shall arise after you
➡️ I also give you what you did not ask for, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall be your equal all your days
➡️ so that there has been no one like you before you, and none like you shall arise after you
➡️ I also give you what you did not ask for, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall be your equal all your days
In the next chapter, chapter 5, we will see how this wisdom unfolds in the preparations for building the temple.
